Identify your client remotely, without a copy of their passport

You send one link. The client picks how to identify, completes it with the provider, and the result comes back as recorded evidence in the file.

How it works

  • You create an identification request on the client and send the link, or let Cloudpliant email it.
  • The client opens the link, picks a method and completes it with the provider. No account, and nothing to install on your side.
  • The result comes back with the confirmed attributes, the method used and the timestamp.
  • The file item is accepted straight away: there is no scan left for anyone to review.

Two methods, the client picks

  • Through their bank or itsme: the bank confirms the details it has already verified. No document, no selfie. itsme is the announced successor to iDIN and operates at eIDAS High, the strictest European assurance level.
  • Document scan: passport, identity card, driving licence or residence permit, checked for security features and matched against the holder's face. Also for clients without a Dutch bank account.
  • Which methods your clients are offered is set per firm.

What lands in the file

Every identification is recorded like any other check: which attributes were confirmed, by which party, at what moment, and which method the client chose. If the name differs from what you had on record, that is annotated rather than quietly smoothed over.

The bank method involves no identity document at all, so no copy ends up in your archive. For a document scan we keep the result and the established attributes; pointers to biometric imagery are deliberately kept out of the file.

What it does and does not replace

It replaces reviewing an identity document for that one client. It does not replace your customer due diligence: sanctions and PEP screening, the risk classification and continuous monitoring all stay exactly as they were.

It also identifies persons, not organisations, and says nothing about the UBO chain behind them. Read it as the accelerator on the person side, not as what completes the file.

Where the law says so

The Wwft does not prescribe a passport photocopy. Article 11 requires you to verify identity against documents, data or information from a reliable and independent source, and leaves it to a ministerial regulation to designate what qualifies.

That regulation, article 4 of the Uitvoeringsregeling Wwft, designates the passport, the Dutch and European identity card, the driving licence and residence documents, and explicitly also a sufficiently reliable means of identification. Both our methods fall squarely within it: the document scan checks exactly the documents in that list, and bank identification through itsme is such a means, at eIDAS High.

Frequently asked questions

Does this satisfy the Wwft?
Yes. The act requires verification against documents, data or information from a reliable and independent source (Wwft art. 11). The implementing regulation designates the passport, identity card and driving licence for this, and explicitly also a sufficiently reliable means of identification (art. 4). Both methods fall squarely within that: the document scan checks exactly those documents, and itsme operates at eIDAS High, the strictest European assurance level. Each identification records which method was used, which attributes were confirmed and when, so you can demonstrate it too.
What does it cost?
EUR 5 per identification, separate from your plan. You pay when the client starts the identification, so a link that goes unused costs nothing.
Does my client need to install an app?
Not for the document scan: the client opens the link on their phone and completes the steps in the browser. Choosing their bank means the familiar login they already use; choosing itsme means the itsme app.
Does it work for clients abroad?
Yes, through the document scan, which accepts identity documents from outside the Netherlands. The bank method is only for clients with a Dutch bank account.
Can I use this today?
Digital identification currently runs with a small group of first users and is not part of the plans yet. Book a demo and we will switch it on for your firm.
